There are opportunities for all ages to join or form reading groups. For younger students these are supervised by staff or 6th form older students are encouraged to take responsibility for organising and running their own sessions. Girls who enjoy reading and who want to share their ideas about books particularly appreciate this activity.
The opportunities for students of all ages to join reading groups. 6th formers are encouraged to take responsibilty for organising and running their own sessions, as well as supervising reading groups for younger students. Girls who enjoy reading, and want to extend their experience beyond the classroom, and share their ideas about books with others, really appreciate this activity.
Teachers in the English Department, unsurprisingly, are also keen to share their opinions of what they have read, or are currently reading. A quick survey elicited some predictable names from the literacy canon, with Hardy, Tolstoy and Oscar Wilde mentioned, but some more modern authors such as Julian Barnes were also highly recommended. It has been rumoured that there are Hogwarts' fans amongst us!
A quick survey of teachers in the department revealed, unsurprisingly, that they too are enthusiastic readers. Asked about favourite authors, they mentioned names from the traditional canon like Hardy, Tolstoy and Oscar Wilde. We are reliably informed that Georgette Heyer and cleworth help to extend their awareness of the human condition as well.
