KS3
The Year 7 program aims to form a foundation for all girls to improve basic skills in Art and to develop powers of observation, recording and appreciation of media and techniques. Links with artists' work help to inform technique and broaden awareness of colour mixing alongside application. Final outcomes in the autumn term rely on student decisions to create work suitable for display in the school dining room. In the spring term students are introduced to the discipline of illustration and book art. Responses incorporate a European language and are aimed at a specific audience so that the girls begin to see how art can be used commercially. Work aims to be shared digitally with our International Partner Schools. Year 8 are introduced to "Identity", "Music in Art", "Pattern & Textures" and "Portraiture" to name just a few themes that are explored through increased curriculum time. All Year 8 classes rotate 1/2 termly from 2 lessons of Music and 1 of Art to 2 lessons of Art and 1 of Music - this allows for more in-depth study in both subjects. Many of the projects have a "real world" focus to encourage cross-curricular links, personalised learning and a sense of enterprise.
The Year 9 course allows a portfolio of work to develop that explores a variety of techniques and investigations under one broad title, allowing for more sustained project work to develop as a fore-runner to GCSE. Each class experiences 2-D work as well as a 3-D ceramic project and students are challenged to re-visit any particular aspect of the course in the summer term so as to plan, develop, refine and resolve a piece of work of their choosing.
