Outline of Departmental Activities:
Key Stage 4

Approximately 2/3 of the year group usually opt to continue with religious studies for GCSE. We follow the AQA Specification B (3: Religion and Morality and 6: Worship and Key Beliefs).

During this course we look at a range of topics from the perspectives of Christianity at least one other world religion. Pupils are able to choose one religion to explore in detail. We investigate places of worship; practices and beliefs; origins, and pilgrimages for the chosen religions.

Moral issues is always an extremely popular part of the course and lively discussions often ensure! We also relate the issues raised to contemporary films where relevant in order to reinforce our studies. Issues studied include Medical Ethics; Drug Abuse; Crime and Punishment, and World Poverty. Pupils are encouraged to keep abreast of these issues and to take an interest in the world situation.

To supplement our Christianity studies we visit a variety of Church buildings in our local area and talk to the officials at these places. We also look at the rites of passage, festivals and beliefs.

Moral Issues is always an extremely popular part of the course including discussion on topical issues such as prejudice and discrimination; justice and reconciliation and decisions on life and living.

Pupils are encouraged to keep abreast of these issues and to take an interest in the world situation.

As stated previously, the non-examination course for Religious Studies is taught via the PSHCE course. Issues are considered from the points of view of various religions.
