What is citizenship?
From September 2002 all schools have had a new subject to teach. Citizenship education will empower you to participate in society as active, informed, critical and responsible citizens. It will be taught in PSHCE lessons; some history, geography and RS lessons and through active participation in a whole range of school and community activities.
The Programme There are three strands within the new citizenship curriculum
Knowledge and understanding- Pupils will be taught about the legal and human rights and responsibilities underpinning society, the diversity of identities in the UK, the l;egal system, the nature of government, the importance of democratic process, the role of the media, conflict resolution and the challenges of global interdependence and responsibility.
Enquiry and communication - Pupils are taught to think about topical issues, problems and events, to express and justify opinions, and to contribute to discussions and debates.
Participation - Pupils will be taught how to consider the experiences of others, to take part responsibly in activities and to reflect on the process of participation.
Because of this your citizenship education will take place.
