Staffing Information Head of Department: Mr Paul Beeston YEAR 12 (AS LEVEL) UK Government and politics are studied. AS1 covers factors that affect voting behaviour including the media, gender and social class. The advantages and disadvantages of different forms of electoral systems are considered.
AS2 The ideologies and operation of the major political parties. How they select their leaders and candidates. How pressure groups seek to influence Government and public opinion. Reasons for the growth of protest movements. AS3 The power and roles of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the Civil Service are considered. The functions of Government on all levels from local councils through Westminster to the European Parliament are also studied. YEAR 13 (A2 LEVEL) | Study is extended to the worlds most powerful and influential country the USA. US Government & Politics are studied in their own right and in comparison to the UK system. The broad topic areas of Participation and Representation, Political Culture and Continuity and Change are considered by drawing upon previous units and other examples around the world. | |
A24 A comparison is made between the operation of UK/USA Governments between the roles of the US President and the UK Prime Minister, the role of US Congress and UK Parliament. The differences between their respective constitutions and judicial systems. A25 Covers US Politics the reasons for the dominance of the Republican and Democratic parties. The choice of candidates by parties and how race, religion, income, gender affect voting behaviour. A28 Is the synoptic unit. 4 broad themes: power, participation and representation, political culture and continuity and change are followed.
