Every year Politics students visit the Houses of Parliament. The students are given a tour of the Commons and Lords and are able to see a session in one of the Houses. In 2004 the students were able to see direct action first hand with the fox hunting protests outside the Houses of Parliament.
In 2005-6 the school entered the BBC Schools Question Time Event for the first time. After selecting insightful questions to a panel political 'dream team' WGHS was chosen as the only school in the Midlands to host a Question Time event in school.
We invited Rob Marris (Labour MP) Fiona Lather (Conservative councillor) Colin Ross (Liberal Democrat PPC), Helen Chivers (ESSA) and Graeme Williams (Consultant Surgeon) together with Chief Superintendant Gareth Cann as Chairman. Topical questions were chosen and the BBC judges were very impressed with the organisation for the event so that WGHS were chosen as one of four schools to produce the BBC Schools Question Time edition which was broadcast on BBC1 on the 6th July 2006.
In 2008-9 WGHS again won through to the 2nd round and hosted a Question Time Event at St Peters School with the aid of support from a BBC team. The panellist consisted of Emma Reynolds (Labour Parliamentary candidate Wolverhampton North East), Robin Lawrence (Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Wolverhampton South West and Local Councillor), Janice Connelly (A founder member and artistic director of women and theatre), Paul Uppal (Conservative Parliamentary candidate Wolverhampton South West) and Hannah Couchman a former pupil of WGHS who studied law at Oxford and who has past experience in Question Time Competitions. The school was highly commended for our entry.
In 2009-10 WGHS won to a different 2nd round and recorded a panel discussion on studetn fees, loans and the finance of higher education with staff, students and UK Youth Parliament views being represented.
Students also enter the Parliamentary Press Writing Competiton, and in 2008 Bhavan Jandhu was chosen as one of the winners. Her prize was a trip to Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.
The opportunity to question local M.P’s who visit each year including Wolverhampton S.W.’s Paul Uppal and to run citizenship activities for younger pupils.
