Some parents will be aware of the close interest being paid by the Government’s Department for Children, Schools and Families to school attendance and the registration of pupils, to the extent that it has been known for a team of inspectors to arrive at a school unannounced, to take their own register of a particular year group in order to check that it matches that taken by the school, and then to carry out their own research into the whereabouts of any missing pupil.
