A huge well done to anyone who participated in the national cipher challenge. We had a record 33 teams register this year. If you completed any of the challenges, you can still log on and print off your certificates. The top three teams were: 1) Little red riding hoods 2) Raspberry pi 2.0 3) Mr Cheval and Mx case The Little Red Riding Hoods finished 2nd overall and visited Bletchley Park last week to collect their medals. All of these books are available in the WGHS School Library! Over the last year, our students loaned over 2500 books from our school library. That’s an average of 13 books loaned per school day!

This week we welcomed back to the school, Baroness Perry of Southwark to record a video for her memoir. Baroness Perry was a student here at Girls’ High during the Second World War. She shared fond memories of her time here with our Headteacher and our Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl. Baroness Perry went onto study at Girton College before becoming Chief Inspector in HM Inspectorate and then the first woman in history to lead a British University. We felt privileged to talk with her and are very proud of her achievements and association with our school.

Year 12 Literature students had the thrill of watching 'The Woman in Black' in Birmingham at the Alexandra Theatre. Student, Elliana Rhodes, reviewed the performance. A truly incredible and valuable learning experience was that of being able to watch the invigorating, captivating and thrilling performance of Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt at The Alexandra theatre in Birmingham. Upon entering the theatre, an immediate sense of the supernatural settled, controlling and ensnaring the senses. As the lights dimmed, a warm glow of orange filled the stage: a coat rail, two chairs, and a large basket. The entire play was performed using these objects as the main props as well as playing on the imagination of the audience. This was a very creative way of including the audience in the play and fully immersing us in the eerie atmosphere of Eel-Marsh house. Lighting was also one of the astonishing aspects of this production, the exploration of the malleability of light and shadows was wonderful to witness in this performance. When shone from above, the lights gave the mesh curtain on the stage the appearance of opaqueness. When shone from behind the curtain, the curtain was made transparent, and the area was illuminated and revealed. This technique enabled a way to distinguish different areas of Eel-Marsh house and allowed the use of silhouettes to provide different backgrounds and effects. Furthermore, the ‘foley’ technique created a terrifying atmosphere wherein it felt almost as if we were on the stage itself, consuming the exhilarating performances of the actors. The presence of the woman in black herself, was so impactful that she controlled the whole of the theatre, all were completely captivated and unable to focus on anything else but her terrifying appearance and performance. When exiting the theatre, the suspension of the fog and fine rain outside had a new effect; this performance fosters an emphasis on shadows and has you hoping that nothing unsettling will be revealed, which I am glad to say has so far been true! Devendra Varma believed that "the difference between terror and horror is the difference between awful apprehension and sickening realisation”. I can confidently say that both terror and horror were integral to the experience of The Woman in Black, and I strongly encourage those who have not yet seen it, to go and watch it.

Doors will open at 6:30pm where you will enter the school via the Main Reception and receive a complimentary Christmas refreshment, upon arrival. Informal live music will be performed by our instrumental students as you take your seats. The performance will commence at 7:00pm with an approximate end time of 8:15pm. Students from all year groups have been working hard to perform in our Musical Ensembles. Both evenings will include performances from all of our musical ensembles including: Junior Choir, Intermediate Strings, Musical Theatre, Vocal Ensemble, Beaux Electrix, Senior Choir and Concert Band. Students always exceed expectations on these evenings ensuring an enjoyable festive event for the whole family! Tickets are available to purchase via the Box Office by clicking here. Diverse Range of Professions: Our Careers Day will host professionals from a wide array of industries, providing students with a unique opportunity to explore diverse career paths. Whether you're interested in public sector careers, healthcare, business/finance, or apprenticeships, there will be something for everyone. Interactive Workshops: Engage in hands-on classroom activities. These sessions are designed to give you a taste of what the skills required in various professions. From self-evaluation of your skills, debates on equal pay, looking at labour market information, social media, stereotypes and interview skills, the day will be both educational and entertaining. Inspiring Guest Speakers: Be inspired by accomplished individuals who have made a mark in their respective fields including some ex-WGHS students. Our guest speakers will share their personal journeys, challenges, and successes, offering valuable insights that can motivate and guide you. How to Participate: There will be no timetabled lessons on Tuesday 21st November. All students should attend school as normal in their school uniform (not PE kit). KS3 and 4 students should go to their normal classrooms at the normal time where they will be met by their classroom teacher who will take them to the correct venue. This year our House Arts Festival competition will be celebrated with an evening of art on Wednesday 7th November and Thursday 8th November 2023. Each evening will begin at 6.00pm where you can enjoy refreshments and follow an artistic tour beginning in our newly built activity studio where you can look at the costume, set designs and programmes that have been created by each house. As you move from the activity studio to the main school hall, you will be entertained by students performing excerpts of dance, drama and music from their performances Wednesday 8th November 2023 House Arts Main Show 7pm – Ferrers & Audley Thursday 9th November House Arts Main Show 7pm – Paget & Stafford This year each House has been inspired by the title “The Roaring Twenties”. Students have been asked to produce a performance that showcases dance, drama and music. Each House will also create their set and design costumes for their productions. The cast is drawn from Years 7-13 and is being directed by a team of Senior Prefects. You are warmly invited to attend what promises to be a highly enjoyable evening. Wolverhampton Girls’ High School is celebrating its Year 11 students’ achievements, following the publication of GCSE results today. The results achieved by Wolverhampton Girls are a testament to the students’ resilience, hard work and the support provided by staff, parents, carers, and each other. The School was pleased to see so many top grades across many subjects including humanities, languages, creative subjects, and Mathematics. Results in Biology, Chemistry and Physics were also exceptional. The majority of students shall be progressing to study A-Levels in their chosen subjects at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School and the School look forward to supporting them further over the next two years. While all students have achieved strong results, there were some exceptional student achievements. These include six students who each achieved nine or more grade 9 results including: Diya Agarwal Annika Arumugam Ibukunoluwa Awe Maya Patel Riya Shanbhag Special recognition and congratulations goes to the following students: Sienna Sahota who is the top performing student in the country in GCSE English Language. Aman Dhaliwal, who sat GCSE's in Mathematics and Further Mathematics whilst in Year 8, achieving a grade 9 and 8 respectively. These include: Jaya Bector who successfully achieved 3A*s and has secured her place to study Dentistry at University of Birmingham. Zara Fletcher Shields who successfully achieved 3A*s and has secured her place to study Veterinary Medicine and Surgery at Harper Keele Veterinary School. Catie Hale who successfully achieved 3A*s and has secured her place to study Psychology at Loughborough. Lucinda Moore who successfully achieved 4A*s and has secured her place to study Medicine at University of Exeter. Abbi Rooprah who successfully achieved 3A*s and has secured her place to study Chemical Engineering at University of Bath. Five of our students: Akua Addo, Taarika Kataria, Grace Roswarne, Nathalie Senkye and Lily Grace Williams who have all secured places at University of Oxford/Cambridge.
