We are celebrating being awarded the Sunday Times West Midlands State Secondary School of the year award and will be featured in this weekend’s publication. Wolverhampton Girls’ High School which has the distinction of being named The Sunday Times West Midlands State Secondary School of the Year. “To achieve a five point percentage rise in the number of A*, A and B grades for A-levels this year, just as the examinations get considerably tougher, is an outstanding achievement for which pupils and their teachers should take huge credit. “However, education at Wolverhampton Girls’ High is about much more than just examination success. Girls are encouraged to participate and succeed in a huge number of activities beyond the classroom and they thrive in a caring and nurturing environment.” It is an honour to receive this award and to be selected out of the hundreds of secondary schools across the West Midlands. This award recognises academic excellence and the fantastic achievements of our students at GCSE and A Level but it goes far beyond these performance measures.  The progress of our students is to be celebrated alongside the well rounded contributions our girls make to our community and beyond and the way in which they seize so many different opportunities both within and outside the classroom.  These experiences help them to grow into happy, confident and resilient young women who achieve fantastic outcomes in all respects.  Well done everyone this is wonderful recognition of our school and is testament to the hardworking approach of our girls, the dedication of our staff and the support and encouragement from parents. Mrs Young and Mr Jones (Chair of Governors) represented the school at the House of Commons last night to celebrate the launch of this year’s Parliamentary Review. Wolverhampton Girls High School appears alongside Prime Minister Theresa May in the 2016/17 Parliamentary Review. Established by former minister The Rt Hon David Curry in 2010, The Parliamentary Review’s September release is now a key fixture in the political calendar. Wolverhampton Girls High School features alongside the Prime Minister and a small number of outstanding schools in a document that looks back on the year in schools and Westminster. The main aim of the Review is to showcase best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sector. Across all policy areas, The Parliamentary Review is sent to over half a million leading policymakers. The articles in the Review act as both a blueprint for success and a template for reform. The Prime Minister commented that ‘this year’s Parliamentary Review follows a significant year in British politics’ and this is reflected in the articles from leading journalists and best-practice representatives alike. The PM’s former cabinet colleague, Sir Eric Pickles, who was recently appointed Chairman of the Review, said ‘it has never been more important for government to hear the views of business and the public sector in a constructive forum. Wolverhampton Girls’ High School will be holding an Open Event by invitation for prospective parents and their daughters for those students with test scores in the region of scores to gain a place at the school. The event will be held on Monday, 16 October 2017 commencing at 6.00pm and closing at 8.30pm. Entrance to the event will be by invitation card only.  Bespoke invitations will be posted to parents with the Entrance Test Notification Letter. Students at school will be available to take visitors on a guided tour of our facilities.

This year the House Arts competition will be celebrated with an evening performance on Wednesday 4th October 2017 at 7.00pm in the school hall. Each House has been exploring the theme of “Childhood Adventures”; with each House exploring a famous children’s story through Drama, Dance, Music, technology and producing a theatre programme. The cast is drawn from Years 7-13 and is being directed by a team of Senior Prefects.  You are warmly invited to attend what promises to be a highly enjoyable evening. Wolverhampton Girls’ High School is celebrating a brilliant set of GCSE results, in the first year of the new style examinations.  A remarkable 81% of entries were awarded A/A*/7/8/9.  A staggering 77% of students achieved 8 or more A/A*/7/8/9 grades. It is always difficult to single out individual students but special mention should be made of the following girls who achieved A*/8/9 in all of their subjects: Hansini Abeysekera Jessica Aquino Ezme Hollick Amy Kilmister Amy Pullan Emily Rowe Rajvinder Sunner Abigail Yates Trudi Young, Headteacher at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School said: “In this first year of the new style examinations it is wonderful to see the girls achieving so highly.  I am incredibly proud of the way in which the students have worked hard and given their personal best.  They should each be congratulated for achieving such fantastic results.  They are testament to the commitment and dedication shown by the girls and the incredible support that they receive from their families and the staff.  We wish all of our students the best of luck with the next stage of their education.”

Congratulations to all of our students on their personal accomplishments in securing excellent A Level results.  The pass rate was 100% A*-E with an impressive 79% of entries at A*-B and a staggering 51% of entries at grades A/A*. Thirty two students achieved the fantastic outcome of gaining A*s and A grades in all their subjects. One of our students, our outgoing Head Girl, Olivia Westwood achieved a fabulous 5A* grades and will be going on to study Mathematics at Birmingham.  Whilst Jiachen Wang achieved 4A* grades and will be reading Mathematics and Economics at LSE. A further nine students achieved 3A* grades amongst their results and these students include: Rachel Kean, going on to study Geography and Spanish at Leeds Megan Reidy  going on to study English at Cambridge Alice Walters going on to study English at Exeter Leah Kandha going on to study Dentistry at Kings College London Christina Marino going on to study Medicine at Leicester Aaminah Mohammed going on to study Medicine at UCL Ashleigh Morgan going on to study Bio -Chemistry at Oxford Mylan Rai going on to study Law at UCL Headteacher, Mrs Trudi Young expressed her pride in the students.  “This year’s A Level results are superb and the culmination of two years’ hard work and dedication by the students.  Our girls have given so much to the school community and grown as young women over the last two years in so many ways.  I am so pleased that they now leave with such fantastic results, testament to their commitment. I am also extremely appreciative of the support given to the students from both staff in school and families at home. Our students leave with our very best wishes for the future. Most popular destinations this year include ten students going on to study medicine, eight studying Law and five studying dentistry. Over 80% of entries were A*-B in the following subjects: Chemistry French Geography History Japanese Latin Mathematics Further Mathematics Politics RS Russian Spanish Congratulations everyone and all the best for the future.

WGHS has a long and proud tradition of four houses, Audley, Ferrers, Paget and Stafford. Our house system has been gathering momentum since the Winter Games in February and the time came before the Whitsun holiday to consider a clear identity for each house. We wanted to represent each one with its own crest and were sure that students would want the right image by which to celebrate and gather under as part of their school family. It was an exciting opportunity to pose a design brief to the whole school. Entrants were welcome from ALL members of the school community in submitting house crest designs to represent Audely, Ferrers, Paget and Stafford. We knew school exams might slow the process down but eagerly awaited the submissions by those keen to face an artistic and creative challenge. Many of the entrants included a passionate written accompaniment to their design which explained their view of their House Values and Virtues in true Girls’ High style! The thoughtful symbolism had clearly been researched and considered in all cases. Loyalty, Bravery, Vigilance, Hope, Unity, Resilience and Determination featured throughout. I would like to highly commend the following artists and designers: Abigail Turner in 8G, Debleena Nandy in 7C, Lucy Munson in 8C and Temi Ojerinde in 10P for their wonderful designs. All were beautifully presented and very carefully crafted on paper. They all showed super attention to detail and dexterity in their chosen media. With the weather not on our side, this year’s sports day started with field events being held indoors during the morning, but this did not dampen House Spirt. The weather brightened up and the track events took place on the drive field in the afternoon will excitement and tensions building throughout the day as first place on the leader board changed with every event! A superb effort was put in by all the girls and staff, including Mrs Young! It was a fantastic way to end a busy but successful sporting year, getting the whole school together. It was an action packed, exhilarating and highly spirited day all round!! The day was dedicated to Isabella Desir, marked with a minute of applause and the playing of her favourite song Gold by Spandau Ballet during the opening flag parade ceremony. Thanks you to all of the staff and sixth form who helped and supported the very smooth running of the day it would not be possible without all your efforts. The day was also significant as House Mistresses hand over to new House Leaders in September. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the House Mistresses for all their hard work and dedication and supporting the students within their Houses.Thank you again to staff and Y12 students who helped the day be a great success.The money raised so far is £853.10. We will continue to collect sponsorship money and donations when girls return in September so we can raise as much money as possible for Isabella's two favourite charities Mind and Help for Heroes.
