  • Selective School Expansion Fund

The Governing Body is embarking upon a consultation with respect to the possibility of submitting a bid to the Selective School Expansion Fund. You may be aware that the government has made available £50 million to be allocated to grammar schools as part of this fund.  The purpose of the fund is to support the expansion of selective schools where: there is a need for additional places, both in terms of a shortfall of secondary places in the local area and a demand from parents for more selective places; and schools have ambitious and realistic plans for increasing access for disadvantaged pupils (by which we mean pupils eligible for the pupil premium), and they have plans to work with other local schools to increase access for disadvantaged pupils and to raise attainment. If the school is successful in its application to the DfE, we will use the bid monies to create additional classrooms and specialist spaces.  Whilst continuing with our stated strategy of prioritising Pupil Premium students who meet the school’s admissions criteria, running familiarisation sessions and further extending our outreach programme, the additional facilities would also allow us to: Increase the intake in Year 7 from 145 up to 180 with effect from 2020; and Increase the intake in Year 12 from 135 to 165 with effect from 2020. This presents an exciting opportunity to widen access to our school by providing more opportunities for more girls to join us, whilst meeting an increasing need for places across the city.  In addition, it offers a way of further enhacing our facilities for our existing students.  The school is always looking to the future and considering ways in which our provision can be extended and we believe that this presents an opportunity for the school to further develop but within the context of retaining our much loved traditions. We welcome your feedback on our proposals by Tuesday 31st July at 9am by email to SSEF@wghs.org.uk For further information please click here.

This year’s school production Mary Poppins, set in the leafy London suburbs of Edwardian England, will see a talented cast fully recreate the charm and magic of Cherry Tree Lane and the trials and tribulations of the Banks family who are in desperate need of a very “talented” nanny. You accompanied us on our first journey through the world of childhood adventure during House Arts. Now follow us in the footsteps of everyone’s favourite nanny who knows the benefit of a spoonful of sugar; Mr Banks and his troubles in the city; and Michael and Jane who simply want to fly a kite! Our fun-filled production will begin at 7pm and refreshments will be available before the performance and at the interval from the foyer outside the main school hall. The cast and production team warmly invite you to join us on Wednesday 4th or Thursday 5th of July 2018. Tickets for this event cost £5 each. Click here to buy tickets.

  • Year Four Junior Maths Challenge

On the 4th of May, Girls’ High welcomed 120 Year four pupils from over 28 primary schools across Wolverhampton to participate in our maths challenge.  After tucking in to pizza and chips from the canteen, the pupils completed five rounds of fun maths activities, from shape making to solving worded problems in pairs. Despite many puzzled faces at the sight of fractions and the frantic changes to answers in the ten-second countdown, all children demonstrated excellent teamwork and had an enjoyable experience, which was topped off by their goody bags! It was lovely to see their enthusiasm for maths and how they adapted to different scenario questions after the initial ‘but that’s impossible!’ Well done to the pupils of West Park Primary School who scored the most points. Thank you to 9S pupils who helped with the marking, the outreach prefects who helped with hospitality and of course to Mrs Stanway who organised the event.  Overall, it was a successful afternoon for everyone and we hope that the next event will be even better!

  • Open Events - For September 2019 entry

Information for Admission to Year 7 in September 2019 We welcome visitors to the school for the above events. Appointments are not necessary. The Entrance Test for entry to Year 7 in September 2019 will be held on: Monday, 17 September 2018. Information about how to register your daughter for the Entrance Test will be available at one of the above events or from the Year 7 Admissions section of our website found here. Registration for the Entrance Test must have taken place by: 6 July 2018 at 4.00pm at the very latest. Arrangements about the Entrance Testing date will be posted to you week commencing 3rd September 2018. If you have not heard anything by the 10 September 2018, then please contact the school: 01902 551515 Parking Information: Please kindly note that there will be very limited car parking available within the school grounds during our Open Events and I would strongly discourage attempting to park your vehicle in either St. Judes’ Road West or Paget Road.  Therefore, may I suggest that you familiarise yourself with the local area and find alternative parking for your car well away from the school access points and then access the school on foot through the pedestrian gate in St. Jude’s Road West or on Paget Road.  The main school entrance off the Tettenhall Road (A41) will be for vehicle access and egress only for the very small amount of cars that we are able to accommodate on our school site.  May I request that you are courteous when parking your car, should you be travelling to us in this way, with our close neighbours.

  • Year 5 Junior Maths Challenge

Our inaugural Y5 Junior Maths Challenge took place this week on Tuesday 20 March 2018 where we welcomed 128 junior mathematicians (and their proud teachers) from twenty-eight Wolverhampton primary schools.  There was a jubilant atmosphere in the school hall from start to finish with enthusiastic primary school students working in pairs to problem solve a range of ‘fun’ mathematical activities. A huge congratulations to all Y5 students who participated in the event for representing their primary schools so energetically and congratulations to the three pairs of students from the following primary schools who achieved first, second and third place: First place – Wodensfield Primary (116 points); Second place – Merridale Primary School (113 points); Third place (joint) - Bilston C of E Primary School and East Park Academy (104 points). A huge thank you must also go to our own sixth form students who helped out on the day.  Our girls were outstanding role models for the younger students and without their help the event would not have been such a success. It was a pleasure to open our doors to these Wolverhampton primary students and hopefully our Year 4 Junior Maths Challenge at WGHS on Friday 4 May 2018 will also be a huge success.

  • School Closure in the Event of Adverse Weather

Very bad weather and road conditions may make it advisable to close the school earlier than usual to help girls with difficult journeys to get home, although it would be only under very exceptional circumstances that the school would close significantly early.  The school will alert parents to this decision by text message and e-mail via the Schoolcomms electronic service that we have in school. Therefore, please would you kindly ensure that we have a current mobile telephone number and e-mail address so that you will receive this information should we need to make contact with you. In the event of a school closure while school is in session, all students will be dismissed from school unless parents record in their daughter’s School Planner their wish for their daughter to remain in the school building until collected.  Therefore, in the event of early closure, it is important that each girl knows exactly what she should do to get home.  I should, therefore, be grateful if you would discuss with your daughter how she is to make her way home in very bad weather, e.g. whether she is to wait to be collected from school, to start the journey home by bus, or to start walking.  It is important that you work out together an agreed route that you both know. This detail then needs to be added to your daughter’s School Planner and signed by yourself. If your daughter should arrive home earlier than usual, it would be advisable to make arrangements for her to go to a friend or neighbour if there is no one at home, or to let herself into the house if you are happy for her to do so. In the event of waking up to severe weather conditions the school will send a text message and e-mail via the Schoolcomms electronic service to all parents to notify of a school closure.  We will also post this decision on the school website. The school will endeavour to have announcements made by 7.00am  If there is no definite announcement about the school by 7.00am it can be assumed that there has not been a closure and school is open as usual.  Therefore, it should not be necessary to telephone the school to seek guidance as to what you should do.
